SURVEY - Tell me YOUR Opinion

Do you agree or disagree that this recession is affecting the behavior of various age groups differently?  Tell me your opinion and/or personal experience with these recent findings contained in the research paper "Growing Up in a Recession":
  • Younger than age 40 (especially ages 18-25): Many be forever more cautious in job choices and spending/investing habits as they struggle to find and retain jobs.
  • Age 40 and older: "Tend not to change beliefs in response to negative economic shocks."

Stay tuned for the results of this survey!

MAKE 2010 YOUR BEST YEAR YET !

Everywhere you look stores are taking inventory - getting rid of the old stuff and bringing in the new stuff.  Did you do that - take inventory of what didn't work in your life in 2009 and start bringing in new ideas for 2010? Here's some food for thought to help you make 2010 your best year yet:
What worked for you?
Think of all of you gained this past year - despite economic stresses and uncertainties.  Did you learn that you could get by on less?  Did you recapture the joy of doing simple things with family and friends?  Did you find fulfillment in helping others?  Did you move from a job into a life-long dream of self-employment? Think of all the things that brought satisfaction and joy into your life - and "restock your shelves" with more of them in 2010.
What didn't work for you
? Often it is our expectations that make us feel that something is a success or a failure.  Once we can let go of the expectation that we can control/change other people or the world (economy, job losses, etc.), then we can focus on what we can control - how WE act and react. Think of what didn't work for you in 2009.  Then let 2010 be a time of letting go of the disappointment over what you can't control/change and focusing on what you can control/change.
What defines your "best year yet"? Each of us has a unique way of defining what is "best" for us. If you have not yet discovered who you are and what you need in your life, make 2010 your year to find that sense of direction, meaning and peace of mind.
Wherever you are in life, at some point, you will yearn for the answers.  If not now, when?  But you don't need to do it alone.  Let me help you make 2010 your best year yet!
Happy New Year,
Coach Betty

Thought for Today - GRATITUDE

I wish you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving!  Thank you for the gift of your friendship.  My gift to you is this simple bit of wisdom to share this holiday season:

"Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more... Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow." (by Melodie Beattie)
Happy Thanksgiving,

HOW'S GRANDMA DOING?

Are you gathering with family this holiday season?  Talk about stress!  While you are struggling to get everything done AND cope with family members – I would urge you to pay special attention to your senior loved ones.  Have they changed since the last time you saw them – physically or mentally?  Are they more anxious, more forgetful, or more augmentative?
These may be signs of underlying health issues that the family – as a team – needs to help your senior address.  Recognize that aging is part of the Circle of Life.  Recognize also that caregiving is not a task that you have to do alone.

RECESSION LESSONS

The summer sun is shining outside here in North Carolina.  Is it shining on you - or are you still under the cloud of this recession?  During my workshops and individual coaching sessions, I have been teaching people how to focus on the lessons learned during this downturn instead of the hardships.  Changing their perspective this way has changed their outlook on life!

What are they discovering?
1 - Family and friends - These relationships have strengthened as folks re-discover that this is the key to happiness for most people.  Time spent together doing simple things has built more cherished memories than their last expensive vacation.
2 - Money - People are learning creative ways of managing with less money.  They are learning to deal with their "money personality" differences in constructive ways instead of letting those differences tear apart relationships.  They are also learning the value of including the kids in the family "money talks."
3 - Health - Instead of letting the stress of uncertainty get out of hand, they are finding inexpensive, constructive ways to release the tension.  They are also learning that focusing on wellness is keeping their medical bills down!
4 - Spirituality - Helping others in need has put their own concerns into perspective.  Sharing has also given their lives more meaning.  For some, it has given them a new career and a new life purpose.

I hope that by focusing on the lessons you've learned you can begin to see the sun shine on you.

Welcome

Surviving the Storm

Congratulations!  You survived the dark days of winter.  But how are you surviving the "economic winter" we are facing?  Most of us have never encountered such upheaval!  And it is not just our money that is at risk - but also our jobs, health, security, relationships, and spirit.

What can you do? YOU hold the keys - not your boss or your broker!  YOU decide what actions to take.  YOU decide what direction you want your life to take. That's what I'll be focusing on in my workshops and support groups in the coming months.

If you attended my "Soup for the Soul" program at The Haven in March, you started on the path to recovery.  You learned the 4 steps for coping with any storm in your life.  Sometimes adversity can actually make you stronger - if you are willing to look forward instead of backward.  The first step is to let go of what you can't change.  Sounds easier than it is - but it can be done. Working together we can accomplish more than you ever thought possible!
